Investment in Ed Tech in Asia

First three-quarters of 2017: $8.15 billion invested in edtech companies globally. In 2016, global investments in Chinese edtech companies rose to $1.2 billion, according to Goldman Sachs.

Edtech expected to rise 20% annually.

New technology

“Cognitive technologies, such as machine learning, neural networks, robotic process automation, bots, natural language processing, neural nets, and the broader domain of AI, have the potential to transform nearly every industry”. Deloitte, Jan 2020.

Will this new tech be a disruptor or enabler for ELT?

Appetite for tech

Huge young population that has a voracious appetite for tech, already immersed in technology.

600 million students enrolled in K-12 schools + a large cohort of 10-24 year olds:

India 356 million

China 269 million (300 million English-language learners)

Indonesia 67 million

90-day Roadmap

“If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up someplace else”

CRM

CRM/Prospects Pipeline

1. Create and start building up pipeline using CRM software and build up knowledge base of potential candidates. 2. Encourage internal collabaration and streamline info gathering through e.g. Jira/Slack/Trello, etc. 3. The mobile app might also be useful for this

Presence

BUSINESS WEB PRESENCE/ACCESSIBILITY

1. It is difficult to get to the rights licensing page from ELT website. Need to make it more visible. 2. Create a portal/landing page that links from a "Business Development" link the main page + a simple contact form for queries 3. The above feeds into the CRM as potential leads

Interaction

BUSINESS-FOCUSED INTERACTION

1. Attract potential edtech companies/entrepreneurs by reaching out to them and interacting with them. 2. Create a new social media and mobile app presence and knowledge base for the above.

Games

GAMIFICATION OF LEARNING

1. Would work for younger market but not with all content 2. Certain markets, e.g. Vietnam, have been more successful with this 3. Research advertising in games

Criteria?

GETTING A GOOD FIT

1. Many "edtech" firms: how to choose who to licence? One-size-fits-all might not work. 2. Lots of government incentives and backing but how do firms operate within their locale and outside of it? 3. Market segmentation - previously good to concentrate on cities. What is current dynamic with increasing internet coverage in rural areas?

Process

Process

1. Rights licence process must be repeatable and scalable. 2. Robust mechanism to make journey from introduction to licensing smooth. 3. Process and expectations must be transparent and cover the rights licence itself, guidance and recommendations for best practice
